Abstract
Spray drying is a continuous operation that converts atomized liquid droplets into dry particles usually in a high temperature environment. Due to its scalable feeding capacity and efficient process manipulation spray drying has become one of the most important powder manufacturing methods in both research laboratory and industry, covering food, pharmaceutical, agrochemical and ceramic materials, etc. However, to prompt R&D in spray-dried particle engineering it is optimal to reproducibly obtain uniform particle characteristics (e.g. particle size, texture, porosity, shape, morphology and moisture content, etc.) and functionalities (e.g. solubility, dispersibility, flowability and catalytic properties, etc.) for every individual particle of a single batch. It, therefore, requires monodisperse atomized droplets and identical evaporation process for every droplet inside the dryer chamber.

This presentation will introduce a specially designed micro-fluidic-aerosol-nozzle (MFAN) able to form monodisperse droplets and some relevant fluid mechanics studies. Moreover, two types of micro-fluidic-jet spray dryer (MFJSD) equipped with the MFAN atomizing system will be presented, including their applications in fabricating pharmaceutical, functional food, magnetic, photoluminescent and mesoporous microparticles with tuneable size and texture.
